A heatwave spikes revenue and costs. Here's how multi-site operators keep refrigeration serviced, energy bought well and teams trained to win the hot days

Heatwave Economics: When the Fridge Fails, So Does Your Margin
Beer is the most weather-sensitive product you sell. In the UK heatwave of July 2022, pub beer sales ran around 40% above the same week the year before. A hot spell is a gift if your refrigeration, your energy costs and your team are ready for it.
Warm weather rewrites demand overnight, and it lands hardest on your equipment. Fridges, freezers and cellar cooling run flat out exactly when they're most likely to fail — and a cooling failure in a heatwave isn't just a repair bill. It's spoiled stock, a food-safety and hygiene risk, and often a kitchen that has to close on your busiest day. The operators who win a heatwave are the ones whose kit was serviced, whose energy was bought well, and whose team was trained to protect the cold chain when it matters.
Waste is the other silent cost. Food waste already costs the UK hospitality sector an estimated £3.2 billion a year — about £10,000 per outlet — and spoilage alone accounts for roughly a fifth of it. In a heatwave, refrigeration works overtime and energy bills climb, so a unit that hasn't been serviced is a unit waiting to fail, taking a fridge full of stock and your hygiene compliance with it. The same spell that spikes your revenue quietly spikes your costs if your equipment, energy contracts and training aren't in order.
This is where technology, energy and equipment meet. Weather-driven demand needs refrigeration that's serviced and certified, energy bought with the scale of a buying group, and staff trained on temperature checks and food safety; all visible in one place so nothing fails on the one day you can't afford it to.
What AP Prokure Does
● Group energy buying so refrigeration and cooling costs are on the best rate before the mercury climbs — typically 10–15% saved, up to 45% on full alignment.
● Refrigeration and cooling serviced and certified on schedule, with automated reminders, so the cold chain holds under strain — and you can prove it.
● Temperature-check and food-safety training tracked per site, so staff protect the cold chain and the hygiene record when the heat is on.
The Cost of Getting It Wrong
● Hospitality: a fridge or cooling unit fails uncertified in the heat — spoiled stock, a hygiene risk, and a kitchen that has to close on your busiest day.
● Care & multi-site: a cooling failure in a heat spike is a spoilage bill and a welfare risk in one — and a compliance gap if the servicing can't be evidenced.
The forecast is free. Ask whether your estate is serviced, cooled, contracted and trained to actually cash in when the sun arrives.
